Consultation Digest (Local) Issue 152, 08 February 2024
Rip it up…
…and start again – regeneration in one of Glasgow's ‘Big Four’ post-war council estates. Making a start in Inverclyde and starting up again in East Dunbartonshire. Also, Nextbike station locations and ‘made’ orders.
Section 1: Current Consultations
(in date order for responses)
1.1: Walking, Wheeling and Cycling in Inverclyde
Council: Inverclyde.
Subject: A rare consultation for this area with a tight deadline. It looks at a variety of routes:
Route 1: Port Glasgow Rail Station – Coronation Park;
Route 2: Lynedoch Street, Greenock – A78/Inverkip Rd;
Route 3: Greenock Town Centre – Branchton Rail Station;
Route 4: Branchton Rail Station – Inverkip (near the marina on A78) and
Route 5: Albert Road public toilets – Gourock Outdoor Pool (NCN75).
Distances range from a few hundred metres in Port Glasgow to over 3 miles to Inverkip. If these routes can get protected cycleways it would be real progress following the recent Spaces for People lanes in Greenock. An in-person ‘listening event’ apparently took place on 31 January 2024.

Deadline: 18 February 2024.
1.2: A807 Active Travel Corridor
Council: East Dunbartonshire.
Subject: An active travel route between the town of Milngavie and village of Torrance. Proposals seem to be a mix of on-road and shared path with options to choose from at one of the junctions. There will be a few public drop in events:
Tues 13 February at 3:30pm–7:30pm in Milngavie Town Hall (Main Hall).
Thurs 15 February at 3:30pm–7:30pm in Torrance Community Centre (Committee Room).
Wed 21 February at 3:30pm–7:30pm in Balmore Golf Club.
One of the above is at the same venue as the notorious public meetings about the Bearsway in 2016. Hopefully these proposals go down better but promoting a shared active travel path with an image of only cycling will probably trigger the NIMBYs!

Deadline: 3 March 2024.
1.3: Nextbike – new station survey
Organisation: Nextbike by TIER.
Subject: New bike hire stations are being planned and Nextbike has a survey for users of their mobile app. The survey link is in a news item on the app (if you don’t have it on your phone, you can download from the Nextbike website). It has some suggested locations to choose from (Penilee, Eastfield, Barlanark, Bishopbriggs, Fernhill or Clydebank). You can also suggest your own location using a grid square reference from What3Words.

Deadline: No obvious deadline.
Section 2: Consultation Feedback
2.1: Drumchapel Regeneration
Subject: A major update following last year's Local Development Framework. The area has just won £14.98million from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund and a further £1.664million from Glasgow City Council. That should go a long way to funding some of the changes to streets around its main shopping area. However, even though it's early days, the cycle lanes in the images look pretty patchy. We'll need to wait until plans come up for consultation to see if there will be a proper network of protected lanes.

Section 3: Proposed Traffic Regulation Orders
3.1: East Dunbartonshire TROs
Website links: East Dunbartonshire TROs.
3.2: Glasgow City TROs
Subject: The last stage of the Traffic Regulation Order process is that they're ‘made’ (legally enacted). Usually, this happens shortly before work is due to start (leaving a six week interval in case the order is challenged in court). Glasgow City Council recently made orders for an Avenues Plus project and the North East Active Travel Routes (NEATR). Including these catchy titles:
- City Centre Traffic Management (Order 2010 Variation No.37) South Portland Street Order 2024 on 19 January 2024;
- Red/Broomfield/Balornock/Wallacewell/Northgate Roads (Traffic Regulation) Order 2024 on 30 January 2024;
- Wallacewell Road, Wallacewell Northern Service Road, Broomfield Road and Balornock Service Road (Redetermination of Means of Exercise of Public Rights of Passage) Order 2024 on 8 February 2024.
There are also two traffic calming schemes proposed for Garnetbank Primary School (top of Renfrew St) and Fernleigh Road (between Kilmarnock Rd and Langside Dr).
